Tuning and Maintenance

  • How often should a piano be tuned?

Most home pianos benefit from tuning twice a year. Newly built or relocated pianos may require more frequent tunings initially. Heavy-use instruments may need quarterly or monthly tunings.

  • Why does my piano go out of tune so quickly?

Causes include temperature/humidity changes, recent moving, loose tuning pins, or worn pinblock. We diagnose and recommend solutions ranging from humidity control to pin tightening or repair.

Repair and Restoration

  • Can you repair a broken string or broken key?

Yes. We replace broken strings and repair or replace keys as needed. For older or rare instruments, part sourcing may extend repair timelines.

  • How do you decide between repair and full restoration?

We evaluate the instrument’s make, age, current condition, and sentimental value. For significant structural issues (soundboard cracks, severe pinblock damage), restoration may be recommended, and we can refer you to trusted specialists.

Technical

  • What is piano regulation?

Regulation adjusts the mechanical dimensions of the action to ensure consistent touch, hammer strike distance, damper timing, and repetition. It makes the piano responsive and predictable.

  • Do you use electronic tuning devices?

We use electronic tools for reference but rely primarily on trained ears and musical judgment to set temperament and interval relationships.

FAQs Specific to Environment and Care

  • What humidity level is best for a piano?

Aim for relative humidity around 40–50% to minimize wood movement and keep tuning stability. We can recommend humidity-control solutions if your environment fluctuates.

  • Where should I place my piano in the home?

Avoid exterior walls, windows, radiators, and direct sunlight. Place the piano in a room with stable climate to reduce tuning instability and structural stress.
